How far would you go to find true beauty?
"I didn't flinch. How could I? It was the first time I wanted someone to see my birthmark.

The little girl skittered back against the wall when I knelt beside her. I tucked my hair behind my ear and turned my cheek, not away from her, but to her."

North of Beautiful is a book about a girl, Terra, with a port-wine, which is a sweet dark-red dessert wine, birthmark. The birthmark says it doesn't matter how you look on the outside but, what is in the inside. She hides her birthmark by putting on layers of makeup.
Terra is dating Eric. He is the captain of the wrestling team but, he doesn't want to be seen in public with her.
Her father is a very strict person throughout the book. He despises to do any sort of work related things. He likes being the boss. He makes fun of Terra's mother, Lois, because of her weight. She is over-weight but she cares about Terra more than anyone in the world.
Along the way, they meet Norah and Jacob. They had an interesting way of meeting. Norah, Lois, Jacob, and Terra go to China and have a fabulous trip. Since Jacob got in the way, Terra is stuck to pick between Eric or Jacob.

The author is telling us that everyone is beautiful. The mood is tense in some parts of the book and calm in others.
